  • Should all bites be treated with the same caution?

It is important to know something about the insects who bite so that treating them becomes easy.
    • Mosquito bites are not a cause of worry. These pests are found anywhere where there is food, water or human beings. Their bite results in itching and does not cause much harm.
    • Ticks could result in certain disease symptoms, so they should be taken off the body as soon as possible.
    • Bees and wasps stings bring with them allergies which may be severe and sometimes fatal.
  • What are the symptoms?

  • For most insect bites and stings, antihistamines such as Promethazine, Chlorpheneramine or Cetrizine will help to stop itching and curb swelling. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help reduce swelling and pain.
  • If bitten by ticks, it is important to make sure that the parasite is removed from the head with a pair of tweezers. The ticks can also be killed by covering them with petroleum jelly or mineral oil. Adequate care should be taken to ensure that the whole tick is removed. The site should be cleaned with soap and water and treated with some antiseptic to avoid infection. The tick should never be burnt, as the flame only agitates the insect.
  • After a bee sting or a spider bite, the skin should be scraped off clean. The bite or sting should not be rubbed, as this will make the reaction worse. The sting or bite should be washed with soap and water and kept clean. A paste of baking soda and water can be applied to prevent further swelling. An ice pack may be put on the affected area for 15 minutes every few hours. An antibiotic cream may be used to reduce redness, pain and swelling and to prevent infection.
