• Once the liver is in terminal stages of damage (advanced cirrhosis), there is no alternative to liver transplantation. Patients undergoing successful transplant live a normal life, with normal life expectancy for age. (Photo: Dr Ravi Mohanka and Dr Arvinder Soin, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi)

 • The first step for liver transplant would be for you to get a liver transplant assessment done for the patient at a centre where living donor transplants are being done routinely with good success rates. Then the donor must also undergo evaluation. Once the recipient and donor are deemed fit for transplant, the operation can proceed. (Photo: Dr Ravi Mohanka and Dr Arvinder Soin, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi).

 • With a living donor transplant, a healthy person donates part of his or her liver to the recipient. This procedure has been increasingly successful and shows promise as a solution to the shortage of liver donors. (Photo: Dr Ravi Mohanka and Dr Arvinder Soin, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi)
