Drinking water that contains disinfection by-products at regulatory cut-off levels does not appear to raise a pregnant woman's risk of preterm delivery. Previous studies regarding the association of disinfected water and adverse pregnancy outcomes have been debatable. To investigate the potential risks that disinfected water poses to pregnant women, particularly in regard to the probability of delivering a small-for-gestational-age infant, researchers from America followed 3800 pregnant women. The researchers collected weekly water samples at the sites where the participants lived and assessed the associations between disinfection by-products and fetal growth. No link was found between exposures to drinking water disinfection by-products, in particular, total trihalomethanes (TTHMs), haloacetic acids, and total organic halides and any increased probability of delivering a small growth restricted baby or delivering a low birth weight baby. Further, it was found that exposure to high levels of these drinking water disinfection by-products did not increase the likelihood of delivering preterm, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. The above findings do not suggest any harmful effect of disinfection by-products levels within the regulatory limits on fetal growth.
