World Oral Health Day 2018: Brushing twice a day and flossing helps improve your yellow teeth

Yellow, stained teeth can be a put-downer when you smile in front of an eminent group of people. Your teeth are prone to yellowing because of a lot of things we do regularly everyday. This includes drinking coffee or tea, smoking a cigarette, inhaling from your mouth when your nose is blocked and having a dry mouth. While you can opt for a teeth whitening procedure at your dentist and even travel outside the country to Thailand and Costa Rica for such procedures, there exist some simple remedies you can use at your home.

If you want to get white pearl-like teeth, free from stains, here are 4 safe and reliable ways to whiten your teeth:

1. Coconut Oil Pull

Before you freak out at the thought of putting oil in your mouth, remember that your food has it anyway. Science has shown that coconut oil is effective in pulling out bad bacteria from your mouth to prevent tooth decay. You can also use olive oil or sesame. Just take a tablespoon of oil and rinse your mouth after rubbing it around for about 15 minutes. It might taste weird, but after a few cycles, the results will be worth it.

2. Baking Soda and Lemon Wash

Baking soda is effective because it is an abrasive that can scrub away stains from your teeth. Also, this sodium bicarbonate balances the acidic chemical in your teeth since it is alkaline and thus returns your teeth to their original whiteness. Use lemon with the baking soda because lemon is a kind of a bleach. Just mix the two to form a paste and rub on your teeth for a few minutes.

3. Strawberry and Pineapple scrub

Both these foods contain Vitamin C that is capable of breaking down plaque in our teeth. They also exfoliate your teeth to bring out the whiteness. Additionally, strawberries have malic acid, which boosts saliva production to wash away surface discolouration of the teeth. Similarly, pineapple is high on bromelain, a teeth whitening compound found in toothpastes. However, some studies do suggest that repeated use of this mixture is too strong for the teeth and can damage your enamel.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Popularly used as a salad dressing, this vinegar kills bacteria and so removes the stains from your teeth. This happens because of acetic acid, a major ingredient of apple cider vinegar. While the liquid is antibacterial and can be used to clean your mouth, it's important you dilute it with water to prevent your enamel from eroding or the softening of your teeth.
