Dr Allen was born near Valpari in Tamil Nadu and educated at Eastbourne College and Christ's College, University of Cambridge, where he took the Medical Sciences Tripos before completing his training in clinical medicine at Guy’s Hospital London, qualifying MB BChir in 1973. After house officer posts, his general professional training was completed in London during senior house officer posts in Lewisham, St Thomas’ Hospital and as a medical registrar for two years at Guy’s Hospital. He passed the examinations for Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1975.
Dr Allen's training in neurology started as a senior house officer in neurology and neurological intensive care at the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery at Queen Square. After general professional training in medicine, he was for two years a research senior registrar at Guy’s Hospital, completing his MD dissertation on the clinical aspects of stroke and cerebral X-ray computed tomography. This was followed by clinical training posts as neurological registrar at the Middlesex Hospital, London and as senior neurological registrar at the West London Regional Neuroscience Centre at the Charing Cross Hospital in London.
Dr Allen took up his current post as a Consultant Neurologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge in 1986. This has included a regular and extensive outpatient practice in Cambridge and Peterborough. For the first eight years of his post at Addenbrooke’s he was also the physician in charge of the Clinical Neurophysiology department at Addenbrooke’s. From 1996, Dr. Allen has been Dean of the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Allen’s mainresearch interest has been in the clinical aspects of acute stroke and this was the subject of his MD dissertation. His practice is in general neurology, covering the whole field of common and some less common neurological conditions, including epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, head injuries, peripheral nerve and muscle diseases, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease etc.
Dr Allen is the co-author of a book (The Management of Acute Stroke, 1988) and author of a book chapter on stroke medicine and has published articles on general neurological and cerebrovascular disease topics, including those for the Lancet and British Medical Journal. He is the co-author of the chapter on neurological diseases in the current edition of Davidson’s Textbook of Medicine (Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh). He was the book review editor and on the editorial committee of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry between 1992-2000. He is a member of the Association of British Neurologists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
