Dr Shakuntala Baliga is Professor and Senior Visiting Consultant at the Mazumdar-Shaw Center for Cancer Research and the Narayana Hrudayalaya Multispecialty Hospital in Bangalore.
She is a graduate and a postgraduate from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. She secured distinction and was awarded the First Prize in OB/GYN at the final professional examination in 1974. She was a postgraduate teaching fellow in OB/GYN at the AIIMS and was awarded the MD degree in May 1979. Her schooling was mainly in Loreto Convent High School, Lucknow. She passed the Indian School Certificate Examination of the University of Cambridge, local examinations syndicate in December 1968 with distinctions in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Literature in English. She was awarded the first Dr Munro award for proficiency in Science in December 1968 at her school. She pursued studies at the renowned Hindu College in Delhi University for her Pre- Medical Degree in May 1970, and secured distinctions in Physics and Chemistry.
She was awarded the Fellowship of the Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in December 1994, and the WHO Fellowship in 1991 to observe basic MCH services in Nepal and Thailand. Dr Baliga was Member of the Committee on Education of the Asia and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AOFOG) from January 1996 to January 2000, and Member of the Medico-legal and Ethical Committee of FOGSI from January 1996 to December 1997.
She completed three years of Senior Residency (Registrarship) at A.I.I.M.S. Thereafter she joined Lady Hardinge Medical College (L.H.M.C.), New Delhi as faculty member. She was Professor from March 1993 till January 2004 when she took voluntary retirement from central government service and settled in her home state, Bangalore. She was Senior Visiting Consultant at the Sagar Hospitals and the Apollo Hospitals Bangalore till she joined the Mazumdar-Shaw Cancer Center and the Narayana Multispecialty Hospital in November 2009.
Dr Baliga was the founder and Chief of the Colposcopy Unit at L.H.M.C for more than a decade. She has special interest in colposcopy and screening of cancer of the lower female genital tract, and has supervised many research projects involving colposcopy. She has authored 3 books titled "Principles and Practice of Colposcopy" published in 2004, "Mini Atlas of colposcopy" (with photoCD) published in February 2008 and "Step by Step Colposcopy, Cryosurgery and LEEP" (with DVD) published in February 2008. She has around 28 publications. She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Delhi, and has been an undergraduate and postgraduate examiner of many universities including A.I.I.M.S. and the National Board of Examinations. Dr Baliga continues to train students enrolled for DNB. Dr Baliga has gained enormous experience in managing complicated cases and emergencies in gynaecology and obstetrics, due to the enormous clinical work at L.H.M.C.
Dr Baliga has vast clinical experience in gynaecological surgery, management of infertility, gynaecological cancers, high-risk pregnancy, critical care in obstetrics, plastic surgery for vaginal relaxations, vesico-vaginal and recto-vaginal fistulae, and creation of a neo-vagina. She has experience in thermal balloon endometrial ablation, cryosurgery, LLETZ, management of menopausal problems, first and second trimester MTPs, premarital and pre-pregnancy counseling, counseling for contraception and endoscopy.
