Dr JM Wadhawan has done his MD Psychiatry from Pune University in 1978 and subsequently PhD from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore. During his tenure in the Indian Armed Forces he has been recognised postgraduate teacher, Bangalore University. He was the head of the Department of Neuropsychiatry at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine Bangalore. He has been the only Psychiatry in India who has been associated with the first and only Indo Soviet Space odyssey, 3rd April, 1984. He has been deeply involved in the selection of cosmonauts, their training (pre, post, inflight)and biomedical research projects in connection with Indo Soviet Space programme. He was made Fellow of the World Health Organization in 1985 and corresponding Fellow of the American Psychiatry Association in 1988. He has been the Chief of Psychiatry at Defence Institute of Psychological Research, Ministry of Defence. He left Indian Armed Forces in 1991 and now head of the Department of Psychiatry in the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
Currently his clinical and research interest are in the field of clinical psychiatry. He has a large number of research publications to his credit.
