Walking best for obese boys

Low-intensity exercises like walking are better in burning calories than vigorous workouts. Walking and other light forms of exercise have also been linked to a number of health benefits apart from losing weight, such as a lower risk of cancer and heart disease, and greater longevity. French researchers examined fat oxidation rates (FOR) in lean and obese 12-year-old boys who were made to perform a graded test on a leg cycle exercise machine, in which the work performed by exercising could be measured. The amount of oxygen inhaled by these boys and the amount of carbon dioxide they exhaled was measured to find out the calories they burnt during graded exercise. It was found that during low intensity exercise, FOR is same for lean and obese boys. But, at higher intensities, lean boys burn more calories than obese boys. It was also noted that obese boys burn maximum calories at a fairly low-intensity rate. This may be because muscles of obese people have a higher percentage of "fast-twitch" fibres, which predominately use carbohydrates for fuel. This proves low-intensity exercises to be better for obese boys, and is good news for all those who want to shed flab but don't want to do rigorous workouts.
