Treatment for infertile men

A minimally invasive procedure called retrograde venous embolisation has been found to be effective in treating men with infertility problems due to swollen veins. Male infertility could be due to problems with the sperm and seminal fluid, or with the reproductive organs. Varicocoele is a common cause of male infertility, and may present as large dilated veins on the scrotum or a large painless bulge or swollen area on the scrotum. Retrograde venous embolisation for varicocoele is done via a tiny catheter. It blocks excessive blood flow into the veins, allowing them to shrink back to normal size. To identify predictors of future pregnancy in partners of infertile men undergoing embolisation of varicocoeles, researchers from Britain studied 223 infertile men (aged between 18 and 50 years) with 228 varicocoeles who underwent retrograde venous embolisation. They found that 226 varicocoeles (out of 228) in 223 patients were treated successfully. Subsequent investigations revealed that the varicocoele had fully resolved in 206 patients (92 percent). A three-months follow up semen analysis showed significant improvements in sperm motility and sperm count. The researchers noted that sperm movement was the only significant pre-treatment predictor of pregnancy amongst other potential predictors, such as varicocoele severity, hormone levels, ultrasound findings, and other semen parameters. The above findings suggest that retrograde venous embolisation does offer fertility benefits, however, further research in this field is needed.
