Mobile phones linked to behaviour problems

Children whose mothers used cell phones during pregnancy and who themselves use cell phones are more likely to have behaviour problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasised the need for research into the possible effects of radio-frequency fields in children. To examine the association between exposure of young children and the growing fetus to mobiles and behavioural problems in young children, researchers from America analysed 13,159 children whose mothers were recruited for a study early in their pregnancies. When their children reached 7 years of age, the mothers were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the current health and behavioural status of their children, as well as past exposure to cell phone use. Factors such as mothers' psychiatric problems and socioeconomic status were taken into consideration. It was found that children with cell phone exposure both as a fetus and while growing up were 80 percent more likely to have abnormal or borderline personality disorder scores on tests evaluating emotional problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity, or problems with peers. The risks were higher for children exposed as a growing fetus in the womb only, compared with those exposed only after birth, but were lower than for children exposed at both times. The findings were attributed to the fact that mothers who are frequent users of cell phones devote less time to the needs of their children, which could result in behavioural problems like hyperactivity among children. Though the findings are preliminary and need to be supplemented by further research, the researchers recommend parents and children to use hands-free technology to minimise the adverse effects of cell phone exposure.
