Mobile phone use may lead to tumour

Using mobile phones for more than ten years may pose an increased risk of developing acoustic neuroma, a benign tumour of the auditory nerve. The risk of developing the tumour is confined to the side of the head where the phone is usually held. There are no indications of increased risk for those who have used their mobile for less than 10 years. One hundred and fifty people with acoustic neuroma and 600 healthy people participated in a study conducted by researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Europe. The risk of acoustic neuroma was almost doubled for people who started to use their mobile at least 10 years prior to the diagnosis. When the side of the head where the phone was usually held was taken into consideration, it was found that the risk of acoustic neuroma was four times higher on that side and virtually normal on the other side. When the study was conducted, only analog mobile phones had been in use for more than 10 years and therefore it cannot be determined whether the results are confined to the use of analog phones or if the results would be also be similar after the long-term use of digital (GSM) phones. GSM phones, which replaced the bulkier and less advanced analog phones now, dominate the mobile phone market. However, the mobile phone industry says that there is no scientific evidence of any health hazards due to the use of mobile phones.
