Low vitamin D worsens asthma in children

Vitamin D deficiency, which can occur even in sunny areas of the world, may lead to more severe asthma and allergies in childhood. To examine the association between vitamin D levels and markers of asthma severity and allergy, researchers identified 616 asthmatic children from Costa Rica, a beach country in Central America, 10 degree from the equator. Of the 616 children, twenty-one had blood levels of the vitamin D metabolite 25-hydroxyvitamin D considered to be deficient and an additional 152 had vitamin D levels considered insufficient. Lower levels of vitamin D were found to be associated with a higher risk of being hospitalised for asthma, increased airway twitchiness, and other severe allergies. The researchers noted that even in nations close to the equator, the increasing tendency to avoid sunlight by staying indoors and wearing sunblocks and sunscreens and more clothing when outside are likely account for the high prevalence of inadequate vitamin D levels. The study, however, did not explore the role of vitamin D in the development of asthma, and whether vitamin D supplementation would be beneficial in the prevention or treatment of asthma.
