Kidney disease linked to foot ulcer

Diabetics with chronic kidney disease have a higher risk of developing foot ulcers or undergoing lower-extremity amputation than non-diabetics. To evaluate the association between foot ulcers and lower-extremity amputation and chronic kidney disease in patients with diabetes, researchers from America followed 90,617 diabetics, aged around 35 years for 2 years. Standard blood tests were used to determine whether chronic kidney disease was present and, if so, how severe. Overall, 378 patients had a lower-extremity amputation and 2619 had a foot ulcer. Compared with normal kidney function, it was found that mild and moderate kidney dysfunction increased the risk of a foot ulcer by 2 and 3 times, respectively. As for the amputation risk, mild dysfunction elevated the odds by 2-fold and moderate dysfunction raised it by 8-fold. The findings hint towards a definite relation between chronic kidney diseases in diabetics and increased odds of developing foot ulcers, even if kidney disease was moderate. However, further studies regarding medications designed to slow the progression of kidney disease in diabetics and prevention of diabetic foot ulcer/lower-extremity amputation are expected.
