High BMI linked to cancer risk

Obese women are more prone to develop invasive ovarian cancer that is difficult to treat. The association between body mass index, weight gain and risk of developing different ovarian cancer subtypes has been unclear. About 90 percent of all epithelial ovarian cancers fall into one of four subcategories: serous ovarian cancer (most common type), clear cell, mucinous and endometrioid ovarian cancer. To investigate the association of BMI and ovarian cancer, researchers from Australia studied 1,269 women from 18 to 79 years old, newly diagnosed with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer, 311 women with borderline ovarian tumours and 1,509 controls without ovarian disease. Height and weight (one year previously, at age 20 and maximum weight) and other risk factor information were recorded through a questionnaire. Obesity was found to increase the risk of developing clear cell tumours more than twice, but not endometrioid or mucinous tumours. There was no association with invasive serous tumours overall, but obesity was linked with close to three-times the risk of serous peritoneal tumours. For women with the borderline tumour subtypes, obesity was positively associated with serous tumours. The findings suggest that maintaining weight and preventing obesity may help women to ward off the risks of developing different ovarian cancers.
