High blood sugars problematic for non-diabetics

Elevated blood sugar levels in people without a prior diagnosis of diabetes may raise the risk of premature death. There haven't been concrete studies on the associations between blood sugar levels among people initially free of diabetes and subsequent risk of death. To explore the impact of high blood sugar level on diabetes-free individuals, researchers from New Zealand studied 47,904 people without diabetes, aged around 35 years, who went through haemoglobin A1C testing (HbA1C) during a screening programme for hepatitis B. There were 815 deaths during the follow-up of 4 years. It was found that the risk of premature death rose up to 7% in tandem with blood sugar levels, the risk increasing steadily with increasing blood sugar levels. Researchers attributed the findings to strong associations between elevated blood sugar levels and death from endocrine, nutritional, metabolic, and immunity disorders. Blood sugar was also strongly associated with death from diseases of the circulatory system. However, weaker associations were observed between increasing blood sugar and deaths from cancer and other unknown causes. The above results support previous findings that blood sugar levels are strongly associated with subsequent mortality in both men and women who have not been diagnosed with diabetes.
