Height linked with prostate cancer

Factors that influence height may also influence cancer risk and more specifically tall people have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. Numerous small studies have linked stature to prostate cancer risk. To investigate the association of height with the risk of developing prostate cancer, researchers from Britain compared 1357 patients with prostate cancer and a comparison group of 7990 men without cancer. The height of all the participants was measured. Though no evidence linking height with low-grade tumours was noted, a 12-percent higher risk of advanced or aggressive cancer and fatal disease was found for every 10 centimetre increase in height. The effect was even more pronounced for men whose height was more related to leg length versus trunk length. The researchers attributed the association of stature and prostate cancer to childhood nutrition, levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 and childhood environmental exposures.
