Gastric bypass surgery for obesity

The risk of having a heart attack or other cardiovascular problems is reduced substantially among obese people after they undergo gastric bypass surgery to lose weight. Past studies have revealed that obese people have an increased risk of heart attack and cardiovascular problems. Researchers from Lebanon examined 6 studies that looked at cardiovascular risk after bariatric surgery for obesity. The studies included 197 patients who had undergone gastric bypass surgery and 163 control patients. The risk was estimated from standard tables that assigned a score for factors such as weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It was found that gastric bypass surgery reduced the risk for a future cardiovascular problem anywhere from 18 percent to 79 percent, compared to participants who did not have the procedure. Also, the predicted chance of having a heart attack or need for heart surgery or dying of heart disease over 10 years fell from 7 percent to 3 percent after undergoing bariatric surgery. For people who did not have surgery, the probability fell from 7 percent to 6 percent. The researchers concluded that bariatric surgery predicts long-term benefits and decreases the risk of cardiovascular problem in obese patients. However, further studies are required to better understand the benefits of the surgery by determining the actual number of cardiac problems.
