Fractures as a warning signal of osteoporosis
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, (AAOS), physicians need to discuss the significance of fractures with their patients particularly bone density status and blood test to check for underlying osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a medical condition that weakens bone by making it more porous and less dense. Bone density is one of the factors that determine bone strength, so individuals with low bone density have a higher risk for fracture and refracture. Osteoporosis is often found in postmenopausal women and certain categories of athletes. Men with a history of hypogonadism, thyroid dysfunction, long-term steroid therapy, high alcohol consumption or low physical activity are especially at risk of osteoporosis.
Researchers at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Children's National Medical Centre in Washington stated that fractures could be prevented with therapies that help regain bone density. There is no specific cure for osteoporosis but diet and life style changes can help to reduce the risk of refracture. Regular weight-bearing exercises like walking, jogging and tennis help build and maintain strong bones. Balance activities help to reduce the risk of falling and adequate intake of dietary calcium and vitamins D is essential to maintain bones.
The risk of a serious fracture can double after a first fracture in certain high-risk groups. Hip fracture patients are at high risk for death or loss of independence. About 25% of the hip fracture patients need long-term nursing home care; half of the patients are unable to walk without assistance; those who experience the trauma of an osteoporotic hip fracture have a 24% increased risk of dying within one year following fracture. Clearly identifying osteoporosis early and initiating treatment is essential.
