Exercise lowers uterine cancer risk

Physical activity, even at light or moderate intensities, lowers the risk of endometrial cancer in overweight and obese women. Endometrial cancer, also called uterine cancer, usually begins in the lining of the uterus and is most common after the reproductive years, between the ages of 60 and 70 years. To find out whether exercise can lower the risk of developing endometrial cancer in overweight or obese women, researchers from America identified 43,000 postmenopausal women. During the 11 years of follow-up, 466 of them developed endometrial cancer. The researchers took a note of their body mass index (BMI), lifestyle and dietary habits of the participants through questionnaires. It was found that all measures of physical activity and avoidance of sedentary behaviour were strongly associated with reduced risk of endometrial cancer in women who were overweight or obese. Physically active women (engaged primarily in low-to-moderate-intensity activities, such as walking, biking, aerobics or dancing, equivalent to about 2 hours of moderately paced walking per week) were found to be less vulnerable to uterine cancer risk. The study suggest that light and moderate levels of physical activity, including daily household chores, may reduce the risk of endometrial cancer possibly through directly suppressing estrogen or increasing insulin sensitivity. Further research is expected to explore the link between light-intensity activity and endometrial cancer risk reduction.
