Exercise eases migraine pain

A combination of aerobic exercise and muscle relaxation may help ease off migraine pain. A recent study has shown that though exercise does not prevent migraine attacks, it does make them less intense. To assess whether or not an aerobic exercise programme combined with muscle relaxation helps easing off migraine pain, researchers from Austria studied 30 female migraine patients. While half stayed with their usual treatment only, the other half were asked to follow a twice-weekly exercise-and-relaxation regime, which included 45 minutes of aerobic exercise and 15 minutes of progressive muscle relaxation, in addition to standard medical care received by them. The participants were asked to complete a range of psychological questionnaires measuring sensational and affective dimensions of pain, body image, depression, and quality of life. It was found that those in the aerobic exercise group reported a greater improvement in migraine pain intensity over six weeks than their counterparts. Those in the exercise group also reported fewer depression symptoms at the end of the study, though their psychological well-being was no different from that of women in the comparison group. The above findings add to the evidence that exercise may offer some relief from migraine pain. The researchers attributed the findings to the assumption that physical activity, relaxation and other non-drug migraine treatments foster feelings of self-efficacy, which can help people cope with pain. However, f Further studies regarding the efficacy of non-medication migraine therapies are needed.
