Drink less to reduce overactive bladder symptoms

Cutting fluid intake by 25 percent can improve symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB). An OAB causes a person to urinate frequently, often urgently. There may or may not be some leakage because of the urgency. To investigate how manipulating fluid intake might affect OAB symptoms, British researchers made 24 people with the condition to increase or decrease their fluid intake from baseline for four days in a row, alternating with two days of normal fluid consumption. It was noted that cutting fluid intake by a quarter led to a 23 percent reduction in urinary frequency, 34 percent less urgency, and a 7 percent reduction in night time urination. Eighty three percent of the study participants said the 25 percent fluid reduction was most helpful to them. When the study participants drank 25 percent or 50 percent more than they usually did, their daytime urinary frequency increased. A person weighing 70 kg should have a fluid intake of 1.6 litres. Fruits and vegetables also contain a substantial amount of water and people typically take in 300 to 500 millilitres of liquid from food daily. The findings confirm fluid manipulation as a cheap, noninvasive and easy way to help control the symptoms of OAB. The researchers recommended that people with OAB, who are drinking more than a litre of fluids, should try reducing their fluid intake by 25 percent but anyone who is drinking less than a litre should not. Drinking too little can cause the urine to become overly concentrated which can also be irritating to the bladder.
