Diet unrelated to diverticulitis

Much against the unproven belief, eating nuts, corn and popcorn is not associated with diverticular complications. Diverticulitis involves the formation of small pouches in the lining of the colon called diverticula. When the pouches become inflamed or infected, the condition is called diverticulitis, which can result in bleeding, infection and small perforations. To determine whether nut, corn, or popcorn consumption is associated with the risk of developing diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding, researchers from America followed 47,228 male health professionals aged between 40 and 75 years for 18 years. The participants were free of diverticulosis or its complications, cancer or inflammatory bowel disease at the beginning of the study. The participants were asked to complete questionnaires on their eating habits every 4 years and questionnaires about their health every 2 years. A total of 801 cases of diverticulitis and 383 cases of diverticular bleeding developed during the follow up. It was found that the men who ate the most nuts (at least twice per week) were 20 percent less likely to have diverticular disease than those who ate the least (less than once per month), and men who ate the most popcorn were 28 percent less likely to develop the bowel disease, the investigators report. No association was found between corn consumption and diverticulitis. The above findings suggest that much against the popular belief, none of the three foods- corn, nuts and popcorn, is related to diverticular bleeding or to uncomplicated diverticulosis. Moreover, the researchers noted that the high content of minerals and nutrients with anti-inflammatory properties in nuts might protect the colon.
