Diabetic women prone to heart problems

Women less than 65 years of age with diabetes tend to have worse heart problems than diabetic men of the same age, leading to higher death rates following a heart attack. Researchers from Sweden analysed the gender difference in prognosis, risk factors and evidence-based treatment in patients with diabetes and myocardial infraction. They studied 25,555 patients younger than 65 years of age who were treated for a heart attack. In this group, 23 percent were women, out of which 21 percent women and 16 percent men had diabetes. It was found that the long-term mortality in the diabetic patients aging less than 65 was higher in women than men. Compared to the male patients, female patients had a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart failure and were more likely to smoke. During the 4 years of follow-up, diabetic women were 34 percent more likely to die than were the diabetic men. In addition, diabetic women were less frequently treated with medications called beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors and fewer women than men had undergone bypass surgery or angioplasty prior to their first heart attack. Nevertheless, the death rate was higher in women. The researchers concluded that women below 65 years of age with diabetes have poorer outcome than men after myocardial infarction. Therefore, greater awareness and improved prevention can help women treat the disease in time.
