Diabetes during pregnancy affects children

Babies who are exposed to mom's diabetes and obesity while in the womb are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in adolescence. To study the association between mother's diabetes and obesity during pregnancy and the risk of type 2 diabetes in children, researches in America studied 79 youth with type 2 diabetes and 190 non-diabetic control youth, all aged between 10 and 22 years. Data regarding mothers' diabetic condition during pregnancy was collected. It was found that 30 percent of the diabetic versus 6 percent of non-diabetic youth were exposed to mom's diabetic in the womb. Further, 57 percent of diabetic youth versus 27 percent of non-diabetic youth being exposed to maternal overweight/obesity. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increased 7-fold with exposure to mother's diabetes and more than 3-fold with exposure to mother's obesity. The association between early diabetes in children and maternal obesity was attributed after accounting for childhood Body Mass Index, indicating that mothers' obesity increases the likelihood of childhood obesity, which in turn amplifies the risk of diabetes.
