To explore the association between depressive symptoms with erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular risk, researchers followed 2,303 male patients in Italy by using a structured interview on erectile dysfunction, composed of 3 scales which explore organic, relational and intra-psychic components of ED while also scoring for depressive symptoms.
It was found that erectile dysfunction with depression increases cardiovascular problems independently from other known risk factors. Furthermore, even the use of antidepressant medications did not alter the relationship between severe depressive symptoms and adverse cardiovascular events.
It was noted that recognising depressive symptoms in subjects with erectile dysfunction is mandatory not only for improving their sexual life, but also for preventing cardiovascular diseases.
The above findings conclude that symptoms of depression constitute an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in men with erectile dysfunction.
