Twelve deaths due to swine flu in one week, along with, a surge in the number of cases since the onset of monsoons, is causing concern in the southern states.
While four deaths were reported each from Maharashtra and Kerala, one death was reported from Karnataka. Three deaths were reported from Mumbai and one from Pune in the past one week. Mumbai has also confirmed 15 positive cases while Pune has confirmed 16 cases, in the last week.
Meanwhile, the biggest surge in H1N1 cases is in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. About 15 new cases have been quarantined at the hospital even as 47 patients are undergoing treatment at home and another 65 cases are awaiting test results.
Kerala Government has stepped up preventive measures following the death of two women due to swine flu and reports of spread of various types of fever, according to the Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan. District medical officers have been instructed to take all necessary steps to check spread of diseases. Local authorities have also been alerted on the matter and have been asked to prepare to tackle the situation.
