32 fresh dengue cases in Delhi

With 32 fresh cases of dengue, the total number of patients suffering from the vector-borne disease in Delhi climbed to 844 on Tuesday. The civic authorities fear that its spread could not be contained unless the mercury goes down. The city has reported nearly 250 cases of dengue in the last seven days.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi maintained that out of the total 844 cases, in 13 cases the infection had been contracted from outside Delhi. According to MCD, the city has reported two dengue deaths so far. On 23 October, a 15-year-old boy succumbed to the disease at AIIMS while a nine-year-old boy breathed his last at the LNJP hospital on 26 October. Last year, 1,070 dengue cases and two deaths were reported in the city.

The community can also help to prevent dengue infection by preventing the mosquito (Aedes aegypti) that transmits dengue from breeding inside and around homes. Every household can undertake the simple measures to prevent existing water collections from becoming places for breeding of the dengue mosquitoes by draining out water from various containers including coolers, by regular changing of water plus cleaning flower vases and discarding or destroying unused items that may collect water and breed mosquitoes. The main strategy to prevent and control dengue is source reduction, or prevention of breeding places of the mosquito vector. Another simple strategy is preventing mosquito bites during the daytime, especially around dawn and dusk, by wearing clothes that cover our arms and legs.
