Long working hours are associated with a high risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD). Checking for information about long working hours to traditional risk factors for CHD may help to better predict the risk.

To examine whether information on long working hours helps predict CHD in a low-risk, employed population, researchers followed 7095 British civil servants from 1991 until 2004. Study participants with existing heart disease, part-time employees and persons with missing data on working hours at baseline were excluded.

About 70 percent of the workers were men, and most (91 percent) were whites. Roughly 2.7 percent developed coronary heart disease by the end of the study. Participants reported how many hours they spent on the job, including information about work they took home.

It was found that more than half (54 percent) put in between seven and eight hours a day, while 21 percent worked a nine-hour day, and 15 percent spent 10 hours on the job daily. Nearly 10 percent labored 11 hours or more. Besides raising the risk for heart disease by 67 percent compared to people working an eight-hour day, working for more than eleven hours a day also put some people into a whole other risk category.

The above findings suggest that a poor lifestyle, including long working hours could be a predictor of heart disease.
