Obesity linked to cancer

Asians who are overweight or obese are more likely to die from cancer compared with people of normal weight.

Excess body weight is an established risk factor for several types of cancer, but there are sparse data from Asian populations, where the proportion of overweight and obese individuals is increasing rapidly. To see if obesity is a risk factor for cancers in the Asian population also, researchers monitored 424,519 people in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand for four years. The researchers took record of the participants' body mass index (BMI). The participants were around 48 years old at the start of the study. A total number of 48,72 people died of cancer during follow-up and 401,215 participants were left for analysis.

It was found that compared to people of normal weight (BMI < 23 kg /m2), participants who were obese (BMI =30 kg/m2) were 20 percent more likely to die from cancer while those who were overweight (BMI = 23 kg /m2) had a 5 percent higher chance. Obese participants were particularly vulnerable to cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, ovary, cervix, prostate, and leukaemia.

The above findings indicate that overweight and obese individuals in populations across the Asia-Pacific region have a significantly increased risk of mortality from cancer.
