Heart disease and psoriatic arthritis

Patients with psoriatic arthritis have an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Evidence for increased risk of cardiovascular death among psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients has accumulated, along with evidence of more risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

To assess the cardiovascular illness in psoriatic arthritis, researchers studied 648 Canadian patients with cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, angina (chest pain), high blood pressure (hypertension), stroke, and congestive heart failure. The average age at the first visit was 44 years, and patients were followed for an average of 8 years.

The researchers found that 122 patients with PsA developed hypertension, 38 had a heart attack, 5 had a stroke, 21 had angina, and 11 had congestive heart failure. A total of 155 subjects had one or more of these conditions.

The findings suggest that the patient with PsA should be screened for cardiovascular diseases and its risk factors. It was also inferred that severe inflammation was a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease.

The researchers concluded that the patients with PsA are at risk of cardiovascular illnesses compared with the general population. Besides known risk factors for CVD, severe psoriasis is an important predictor in patients with PsA.
