Smoking raises prostate cancer risk

Cigarette smoking increases a man's risk for developing and dying from prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men. The exact cause is unknown. It may run in some families or may be related to diet. It may arise due to an imbalance of certain body chemicals or growth factors that control the growth and division of cells in the prostate gland. To evaluate the relationship between smoking and prostate cancer risk, researchers from America pooled data from 24 studies enrolling 21,579 prostate cancer patients.

It was found that both the chance of developing prostate cancer and dying from prostate cancer increased with smoking, even though many of the studies used crude smoking classifications. For example, they designated smoking status as ever versus never rather than by packs smoked per day. In eight studies with 8,700 men that provided more in-depth information about number of cigarettes smoked per day, a 30 percent higher risk of dying from prostate cancer was seen in the heaviest smokers versus nonsmokers. The researchers also estimated a 22 percent higher chance of developing prostate cancer in the heaviest smokers, based on pooled information from four studies with 2,100 men.

The analysis provides evidence that prostate cancer is likely to be a smoking-related tumour. However additional research is needed that quantifies how the number of packs and duration of smoking affects risk for developing the disease and its progression.
