Counselling required for post-vasectomy pain

Vasectomy is a safe and simple procedure, but painful side effects may be more common than previously thought. Nearly one out of every seven men who had a vasectomy experienced chronic pain in the scrotum. Based on a new study, researchers recommend that men who are considering having a vasectomy should be counselled about this possible side effect. During vasectomy, a surgeon cuts a small section out of each vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testes. The open ends of the tubes are then closed. Scrotal pain after a vasectomy can be distressful for patients, but little is known about how often this side effect occurs. Researchers from the Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, United Kingdom, surveyed 460 men who had undergone a vasectomy. The men had the procedure either 1 year or 10 years before the study was conducted. About 14 percent of men who had a vasectomy a decade earlier reported developing scrotal pain after the procedure. Of the men who had underwent the procedure a year before, about 17 percent experienced persistent scrotal pain. In some cases, sexual activity aggravated the pain. The results of the study suggest that scrotal pain after vasectomy is more common than previously thought, so adequate preoperative counselling must be given about this possibility. The source of post-vasectomy scrotal pain is unknown, but possible causes include obstruction, increased pressure, hardening and stagnation in the scrotum. When scrotal pain occurs, it is usually treated with painkillers and antibiotics, in case an infection is to blame. Surgery, including reversal of the vasectomy, may be needed in hard-to-treat cases.
