Anaesthesia and behaviour problems

Young children who are exposed to general anaesthesia might be at risk of developing behaviour, language and other developmental problems. To study the link between exposure to Anaesthesia and developmental problems in children, researchers from America identified 625 children younger than 3 years old, who were given general Anaesthesia for hernia surgery. These were compared to a group of 5,000 children of the same age group with no history of Anaesthesia. It was found that the anaesthesia -exposed children were about twice as likely to be subsequently diagnosed with a developmental or behaviour disorder than those who were not. Specifically, 30 anaesthesia -exposed children (approximately 5 percent) were diagnosed with developmental and behaviour disorders during follow up, compared with 75 unexposed children (approximately 2 percent). The researchers noted that anaesthesia-exposed children may have had other issues that predisposed them to developmental and behaviour problems. However, the excess risk of developmental and behaviour disorders in the anaesthesia-exposed children cannot be completely explained by health factors like infection, or premature birth or low birth weight, or by demographic factors. Further study into the association of Anaesthesia exposure and developmental problems is expected to follow. The researchers also added that parents should not keep their children from having necessary surgery because of this concern.
