Eating fish may prevent heart failure

Eating fatty fish no more than once a week, and an intake of about 0.3 grams per day of marine omega-3 fatty acids, appears to reduce the risk of heart failure in middle-aged and elderly men. Herring (Bhing), mackerel (Bangda), salmon (Raavas), whitefish (Katai), and char are considered as fatty fish. Marine omega-3 fatty acids are derived from food sources or consumed as supplements. Past studies have revealed that fatty fish and omega-3 fatty acids are associated with lower rates of heart failure (HF) among elderly but has not been confirmed in broader age ranges. Therefore, researchers from America studied 39,367 men, aged between 45 and 79 years to find out the association between fatty acids and low rates of heart failure. All the participants filled food intake questionnaires. After a follow-up of 7 years, it was found that 597 subjects developed heart failure. Eating fatty fish once per week versus 'not at all' reduced the risk of heart failure by about 12 percent, although the association was not significant statistically. By contrast, the association between marine omega-3 fatty acids and heart failure was significant, with the lowest risk seen among those in the middle range of intake, that is, 0.32-0.40 grams per day. The levels of mercury and organic contamination of fish could be very high in some parts, which could raise the risk of heart disease and offset the benefit of fatty acids. The researchers concluded that the associations derived from the cohort were U-shaped, however, with lesser or greater consumption showing no protective effects.
