Studies in the past have suggested a link between obesity and pancreatic cancer. To further investigate the association, researchers analysed data on 2,170 American people with pancreatic cancer and 2,209 people without the disease. The researchers took into account the participants' body mass index (BMI), weight, height, waist circumference, and waist to hip ratio.
A positive link was found between between increasing BMI and increasing risk for pancreatic cancer. Overall, people in the top fourth category based on their BMI had a 33 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those in the bottom fourth. It was also found that women who were overweight had a 31 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer compared to normal weight women. The women with the biggest waist-to-hip ratio had a 87 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer.
The above findings confirm that the risk of pancreatic cancer climbs with BMI, (a standard measure of weight in relation to height used to gauge obesity), especially in women.
