Will Letroz help me conceive?
Q: I am a 27 years old female undergoing treatment for infertility for the last four months. I have been diagnosed with PCOD. I had my last menstrual periods one and a half months back and I started Letroz on the third day and took it for 5 days and started taking Folicin (Folic acid tablets) after that. I had unprotected sex with my husband on all the important days as per the doctor’s directions. From 22nd day onwards, I was prescribed to take Duphaston for 5 days. Are these drugs safe? Will I conceive?
A:Letroz is ok for PCOD patient who wants to conceive. However, evaluation of blood sugars, testosterone levels and lipid profile is necessary, and treatment with metformin also in case of high body weight and an ovulation. Results for conception improve after weight reduction as well. If the thyroid or testosterone are also raised that too needs to be addressed. It is better to treat for pregnancy by an infertility specialist as well as an endocrinologist, as these people need long follow up. Conception with Clomid and/or Letroz is as high as 60-70% but there is higher risk of miscarriage or other foetal problems too that have to be settled.
