Why is my urine dark yellow in colour?
Q: I am a 52 years old diabetic, also suffering from osteoporosis. I have observed that my urine is dark yellow in colour. I also experience burning sensation while urinating at times. I don't have any urinary infection. For the last four years, I am taking calcium 600 mg twice a day for treating osteoporosis. I also take Metformin hcl 500 mg thrice a day for controlling my blood sugar. Is my urine dark yellow in colour due to these drugs?
A:Most common cause of dark coloured urine is the status of dehydration. The urine colour, thus, would be darker in summers and lighter during winters. Urine may be coloured with colour in medications including vitamins (carotene and B complex), as well as due to dyes used in the food. Blood in urine or urine infection may also change urine colour, but that has already been excluded in your case with urine examination. Some liver conditions or hemolysis due to any reason also may change urine colour. I would advise to increase water intake and watch your urine colour for few days. If abnormal urine colour persists even after 3 to 4 days, you must see a physician.
