When should ART be started for AIDS patients?
Q: An HIV positive person is on Anti-Retroviral-Treatment (ART) - DUOVIR (zidovidine, lamividine) for the last one and a half years (his CD4 count was 508 at that time). Now his CD4 count is 514. Please tell me, shall we stop ART and wait till CD4 count is <200 or continue it?
A:The current recommendations by the WHO, especially in resource constrained countries, is to start anti-retrovirals when the CD4 count comes to 200 or less. However in the case you mentioned I cannot advise on treatment. Please contact the treating doctor and ask him.
