Can we have a healthy baby despite my wife being HIV positive?
Q: I am a 24 years old HIV negative man married to a HIV positive woman. We want to try for a child. I would like to know if there is medication that can prevent the child from being infected. Is there any risk of me also getting infected?
A:For having a child, you will have to have sex without a condom with your wife. That will surely put you to risk of getting HIV infection from your wife. Still if you get in touch with a medical college in your state, you can consult the Deptt. of Reproductive Biology who can advise you more on this possibility being reduced. Secondly, these days, the HIV infected mothers are put on certain medications during pregnancy and delivery so that chances of her baby becoming infected with HIV are very largely reduced. Please consult the ICTC of a Medical College near your home when your wife becomes pregnant.
