What is the window period for HIV infection?

Q: Please clarify for me the window period for HIV. Some say 6-12 weeks, some six months while others say one year. I underwent the test after 3 months. Do I need to test again.

A:Generally the Window Period is accepted to be 3 months in most cases. In some few cases, the antibody level may take a little longer than 3 months to rise to a level detectable by the older ELISA tests. I feel you should believe the results but depending upon the type of exposure, one more test may make you feel more relaxed about your status. Please do not make the mistake of repeated testing just because you do not believe the results, that can have bad consequences.
