What do my cousin’s conflicting HIV test reports indicate?

Q: My cousin’s husband died of HIV infection four months back. When we got her tested with PCR test, it stated that she is HIV negative. But a few days after PCR test, VCTC Try dots test reported that she is HIV positive. We are utterly confused now. Is she infected with HIV or not?

A:I am not surprised you are confused, these are rather confusing reports. However I think that keeping in mind that the husband was HIV+ and she has a positive report from two separate tests, I think it is safe to assume that she too is HIV infected. However I cannot explain whey the PCR test was negative.
