How can I save my failing kidneys?

Q: I am 56 years old, diabetic from the last 26 years and insulin dependent from the last 20 years. I am presently taking Humulin 70/30, 50+30 units, Neudipar 500 mg, Tritace 5 mg, Piozer 30 mg and Diamicron 30 mg. My sugar level remains 120-150 normally and blood pressure remains 140-85. During my last blood test it was observed that the blood urea was 48 and creatinine was 1.1 and protein was ++ in the urine. I think this indicated that my kidneys are going to fail so I stopped protein rich diets. Can you please suggest me any medication to stop/delay this kidney failure?

A:As per data provided, you have developed nephropathy meaning kidney disease due to diabetes. Although your kidney function is ok your kidneys are affected because of long standing DM. To prevent further kidney damage you should do following:

  • Protein restricted diet; best is contact a dietician and take a diet chart for 1500 calories, 30 gm protein and 2 gm salt.
  • Keep your BP 120/70 mm Hg by using medication like Cardace, Enalapril or Cadesartan. Contact your physician for proper dosage. The above medicines will also protect your kidneys.
