Can a diabetic undertake ramzan fasting?
Q: Can my 12 years old daughter undertake her ramzan fasting? She has type 1 diabetes for the past 3 years and takes Lantus 28 units.
A:The best thing is to avoid fast during holy month of Ramzan. In case this is unavoidable one can take premix insulin like Mixtard/Novomix 30 before breaking the fast in evening and regular insulin like Actrapid/Novorapid during early morning. Out of these Novomix 30 and Novorapid are preferred. In case someone has brittle diabetes and he/she goes into ketosis even after missing a single dose fast is not advised at all.
