Are silver fillings safe?
Q: I am 35 years old and have had my teeth filled several times. Some doctors say that silver filling is harmful as it contains mercury so go for laser filling. I got a laser filling done but it didn't last long. Another doctor said that silver filling lasts longer and it has no side effects but the tooth needs to be dug more. Are silver fillings dangerous? What is the best filling available which can last longer?
A:Silver filling is absolutely safe if handled properly for dental fillings. Depending upon the situation, sometimes it requires more cutting of enamel in case of silver fillings. There is nothing ideal in terms of dental filling - depending upon tooth, its position, and amount of decay and aesthetic need, both materials can be used.
