Will these medicines have side effects?
Q: My wife is 37 years old. Her LMP date was 9th July, 2007. She was advised to take two medicines: Ethinyl Estradiol 0.02 mg and Norethisterone 10 mg one tablet per day for 3 days. She took these medicines for 3 days. This week she tested positive in the pregnancy test. I would like to know if there will be any harm to our baby. Please advise.
A:The use oestrogen and progesterone to confirm pregnancy was banned more than 15 years ago. These hormones must not be used during known or suspected pregnancy. However it is most unlikely that any damage to foetus would have been done with low dose on three days. Use of norethisterone during pregnancy (after 45 days) can lead to virilisation (hair on face, etc) of female foetus.
