Will a cyst in the fetal urinary bladder have any harmful effects on my unborn child?

Q: I am in my 25th week of pregnancy. My scan report says a cyst in the fetal urinary bladder. Doctors feel it could be an ectopic kidney (as left kidney is not seen in position). A repeat scan showed that the size of that cyst has almost doubled. Could it be due to water retention? What could be the effect of these on my child? Doctors don't want to do anything as of now and will wait and watch and will take action after the baby is born. Will this create any kind of pressure on any other parts of the baby's body? My mother has a problem of kidney failure and is on dialysis. Can it be related to that? I mean can it be inherited?

A:I have gone through your report which does not suggest any major abnormality in baby. However during repeated sonography everytime you should look for fluid around the baby. In case fluid is reduced (Oligohydramias) then one can say that there is something wrong with babys kidney and complete evaluation after birth of the baby should be done. Since 2nd kidney is normal baby should not have any problem in future.
