Why is protein coming out in the urine of a child?

Q: My 2 years old niece is having a kidney problem. Protein is coming out of her body through urine and there is swelling in her body too. What could be cause of this? Can this be cured? If yes, what is the treatment?

A:The commonest reason for protein in the urine in 2 year old child is what is called minimal change disease. The kidney's filter called glomerulous develops increased porosity and allows prteins esp albumin to be filtered. This condition responds to a course of steroids. Children usually grow out of this disease. You should see a pediatrician or a nephrologist close to your place for management.
