Why is my right kidney small?

Q: I am a 22 years old boy and have a small right kidney. The right kidney is functioning 8% while the left one is functioning 92%. I also got to know that I have high blood pressure but now it is under control after taking medicines. I have undergone the DMSA scan and some other scans too but I am not clear what is wrong with me? My doctor has not given me any medication but keeps calling me back after a month with some tests. What should I do?

A:You have a small contracted poorly functioning right kidney. The causes could be that you are born with a dysplastic kidney or the kidney may have developed pyelonephritis & become small. There is no method to improve a small shrunken poorly functioning kidney. One should look at the other kidney and preserve function of that kidney. One good kidney is good enough for a person to live normally.
