Why is Betnesol injection advised in twin pregnancy?
Q: My wife is carrying twins and has completed 7 months of her pregnancy. My doctor has prescribed her to take Betnesol injection. I have read that it is not safe to take this injection during pregnancy. Why has she been advised to take this injection? What is the advantage to take it at this stage?
A:Betnesol is the brand name of a medicine called betamethasone - one of many steroids. It is true that we do not use steroids in normal pregnancy. However in the case of twins, steroids are used to (a) prevent premature delivery and (b) improve lung function. In this particular case, please abide by your gynaecologists judgement.
