Why do I have irregular periods?

Q: I am a 42 years old woman who had normal periods five months back but had a missed period for a month and then the following month I had bleeding for 20 days with clots. Later it stopped but the doctor felt it could be an infection and I was treated for 5 days. My pelvic cramps were cured. But again the next month I had bleeding for 3 days. Since then I am getting little blood drops. Why is it so and what needs to be done? Do I need a pap smear and where can I get it done?

A:Get yourself examined by a gynaecologist. The doctor will advise you what type of treatment you require. This bleeding may be due to a hormonal imbalance, polyp, etc. If required hysteroscopy or D&C may be done. After bleeding stops you can get the pap smear done. Pap smear can be done at any laboratory and your gynaecologist can take the sample.
